The government is set to reduce licence renewal fees of four mobile operators by nearly Tk 70 billion from Tk 140 billion proposed by telecom regulatory commission in its draft guideline, ministry sources said.
The ministry of finance will finalise the decision today at a meeting with the LGRD, post and telecommunication and science ministries.
Sources said the government will reduce Tk 20 billion out of spectrum fee, revenue sharing and social obligation fee.
As per the reduction the spectrum assignment fee for per mega hertz will be Tk 1.50 billion for both 1800 and 900 band of GSM technology which was earlier Tk 1.50 and Tk 3.00 billion respectively.
Besides, it will reduce Tk 0.5 billion for CDMA system which was proposed at Tk 1.50 billion.
Tk 50 billion will be reduced from the spectrum and bandwidth use charges, which was earlier proposed at Tk 70 billion for Grameenphone, Banglalink Tk 33 billion, Robi Tk 31 billion and citycell Tk 10.20 billion, ministry sources said.
An official said they will also take decision about issuing Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) licence and the licences of International Gateway (IGW), International Connection Exchange (ICX) and International Internet Gateway (IIG) for international call transmission as the issues remain unresolved for a long time.
Industry insiders think the meeting will determine the fate of fast growing sector
In response to operators` demand, the ministry concerned is finalising the draft by reducing fees.
Telecom ministry sources said non-telecom issues, such as employment directives, corporate social responsibility (CSR), liability on grey traffic, separation of access and transmission, mobile number portability and IPO will be removed from the guideline.
The licencing tenure of four operators -- Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Citycell will end in November this year.
