Inflation dropped marginally to 10.17 per cent in June, from 10.20 per cent during the previous month, backed by slower rise in food prices. In April 2011, the country’s consumer price index (CPI) was recorded at 10.67 per cent, and it came down to 10.20 per cent in May. During June 2010, inflation was at 8.70 per cent.
Food inflation in the current fiscal year hit 11.34 per cent, compared to 8.53 per cent in FY 2009-10, said the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
In contrast, non-food inflation eased to 4.15 per cent in 2010-11, from 5.45 per cent in the previous year. BBS said that annual inflation rate stood at 12.51 per cent during FY 2010-11, while it was at 13.16 per cent in May. The point-to-point food inflation reduced 0.65 per cent, from 10.88 per cent in FY
2009-10.
Food price inflation rose to 14.10 per cent in June, from 9.62 per cent in May 2008, while that of non-food items came down to 3.54 per cent, from 3.89 per cent, according to BBS.
On the other hand, inflation rate hit 9.94 per cent in June 2008, from 9.87 per cent during the previous month, on annual average basis.
"The pass-through of unusual fuel price rise in the international markets was not evident in the country's CPI, since administered fuel prices were adjusted at the end of the quarter under review,” said Bangladesh Bank's quarterly report for April-June, 2008.
"While the impacts are yet to be seen, these adjustments may somewhat push up the point-to-point inflation in the coming months," the quarterly statement noted.
Non-food inflation increased 0.95 per cent on a point-to-point basis, in June, while it was 5.73 per cent during the same month of the previous year. Non-food inflation was 4.78 per cent in May this year, and 3.97 per cent in April, while it was 5.24 per cent in FY 2009-10.
At the end of the outgoing fiscal year, the inflation rate slightly reduced in rural areas, to 10.91 per cent, while it was 10.93 per cent in May, and 11.49 per cent in April. In June 2009, inflation rate in rural areas had stood at 8.74 per cent.
Food inflation in rural areas was at 13.53 per cent in June, while it was 14.05 per cent in May, and 10.40 per cent in 2009-10.
Non-food inflation was at 5.69 per cent in rural areas in June, while it was 4.79 per cent in May, and 3.90 per cent in April. In urban areas, the inflation rate was 8.33 per cent in June, while 8.37 per cent in May, and 8.62 per cent in April.
Food inflation in urban areas reduced 0.93 per cent in June, to 10.20 per cent, while it was at 11.13 per cent in May, and 12.04 per cent in April. In 2009-10, food inflation rate in urban areas was at 11.97 per cent.
